In our last blog post, we reported on the October 18 signing of Int. 642-A, a historic piece of legislation that will raise the biodiesel content of New York City’s Bioheat® fuel from 2% (B2) to 5% (B5) by October 2017 and then up to B20 by 2034. This increase, as we mentioned, will not occur overnight. To ensure a smooth transition that can meet the fuel demands and heating needs of all New Yorkers, Bioheat fuel’s biodiesel content will be increased incrementally over the next 18 years.

Several New York Oil Heating Association members were on hand to witness the signing of the bill, which will raise New York City heating oil’s standard biodiesel component from 2% to 5% by October 2017 and incrementally to 20% by 2034, and the feeling of excitement in the room was palpable as Mayor de Blasio and company ushered in a new era for NYC Bioheat® fuel.

It’s official. B5 Bioheat® fuel (5% biodiesel) is coming to NYC in 2017. According to a press release issued September 28, 2016: “The New York City Council today voted overwhelmingly to pass INT. 642-A, sponsored by Council Member Costa Constantinides. The legislation ensures more sustainable energy consumption by increasing the use of biodiesel in home heating oil.
