Nearly all of the petroleum, natural gas and electricity sold in the U.S. are traded through contracts on the global commodities market. These trades are supposed to be overseen by the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), an agency of the U.S. Government, in order to ensure markets operate free from manipulation. "Supposed to be" ... but maybe not.
Remember Enron? Nineteen individuals were indicted in this scandal that involved the now ex-corporation's manipulation of the California electricity market through trades of electricity contracts. Alleged manipulation of natural gas markets by Amaranth is now under investigation. Could the same manipulation by Wall Street traders be going on regarding your heating oil prices? While some may believe that volatile energy prices during the last few years are the consequence of supply and demand imbalances, others contend that another Enron and Amaranth is the cause.

Fortunately, there's Senate legislation called the "Close the Enron Loophole Act," which the Oilheat dealers of the New York Oil Heating Association (NYOHA) - along with hundreds of other Oilheat dealers and their respective associations across the country - are actively trying to get passed.
Please join the dealers of NYOHA in contacting your local Congressional delegation and asking each and every one of them to reaffirm their support to pass this important legislation ... and to make sure energy markets are properly overseen by the government and free from manipulation.
