Bioheat®

Oilheat has a great, green future, and Bioheat® plays an important role. Bioheat is a blend of traditional heating oil and renewable biofuels that are derived from plants and food byproducts. The fuels blend easily and burn flawlessly in existing Oilheat systems.

What are the benefits of BioHeat®?

Produced domestically, BioHeat incorporates biofuel made from crops like soy or from food byproducts. Both sources are renewable and can replace imported oil.
BioHeat is extremely clean burning with reduced sulfur and particulate emissions, making it environmentally friendly. It costs just about the same as "regular oil." You don't have to make any modifications to your burner or tank. You don't have to change your budget plan, payment plan, service contract or warranties.

Here in New York City ...

  • The City government took a bold step in 2008 to replace traditional heating oil with environmentally friendly biofuel blends. City officials sought bids for B5 heating oil, which is a blend of 95% petroleum-based heating oil and 5% biodiesel, which is derived from plants and food byproducts. Officials are looking to use B5 in place of traditional No. 2 heating oil in city-owned buildings in order to reduce emissions and decrease demand for imported oil. The City is investigating whether biodiesel blends can replace other forms of heating oil (No. 4 and No. 6) as well. This initiative is part of Mayor Bloomberg's goal to reduce New York City's carbon emissions by 30% by the year 2030.
  • The City Council is considering a proposal to mandate the use of biofuel blends throughout the city. City Councilman James Gennaro has introduced legislation that would gradually phase in a biodiesel blend for home heating oil.
  • New York State encourages the use of Oilheat/biofuel blends with a generous tax credit from January 1, 2008 through January 1, 2012. Residents can claim a direct income tax credit of up to 20 cents for each and every gallon they buy - one cent for each percentage point of biodiesel in a gallon of their heating fuel.

Here are just a few examples of what BioHeat can be made from:

  • Camelina
  • Coffee
  • Cottonseed
  • Corn
  • Flax
  • Pumpkin Seed
  • Rapeseed
  • Rice
  • Sesame
  • Soybean
  • Sunflower
Researchers are working on processes to produce biodiesel from algae and other non-food crops.
